What Shell does

Shell plc operates as a global energy and chemicals enterprise, with its operations organized into four primary divisions: Integrated Gas, Upstream, Oil Products, and Chemicals. The company actively explores for and extracts crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids. It also manages the processing, transportation, and distribution of these resources, including the production of gas-to-liquids fuels and developing the essential infrastructure for market access. Shell is a significant player in trading natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), crude oil, electricity, and carbon credits, additionally providing LNG as a fuel for heavy transport and maritime vessels. In its Oil Products segment, Shell refines crude oil and various other feedstocks to produce a wide array of petroleum products, such as gasoline, diesel, heating oil, aviation and marine fuels, biofuels, lubricants, bitumen, and sulfur. The Chemicals division is responsible for manufacturing and supplying industrial petrochemicals, overseeing oil sands ventures, and producing both base chemicals (ethylene, propylene, aromatics) and intermediate chemicals (including styrene monomer, propylene oxide, solvents, detergent alcohols, ethylene oxide, and ethylene glycol). Originally established in 1907 as Royal Dutch Shell plc, the company adopted its current name, Shell plc, in January 2022 and is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands.
